If you are a long-time reader of my blog {THANK YOU!}, you know that my family has experienced some crazy stuff in the past. So, it shouldn't surprise you to learn of the more recent events that we've had to deal with. Ugh.
First, my oldest son Jake was in an accident- a very bad accident. He had to be transported to the trauma unit of Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. As a result of the accident, he suffered two broken vertebrate and virtually very little skin is left intact on his back. He spent a little over two weeks in the hospital. The first couple of nights, I slept in a chair at his bedside, and once we were certain he was no longer critical, my husband and I visited as much and as long as the hospital allowed us to be there.
We are grateful to our family and friends who also visited, helped care for our youngest son, and checked in often to see if we needed anything. Once Jake was able to come home, we were relieved and exhausted {really exhausted}. Jake was strong throughout those weeks, dealing with the pain as best he could.
Then, a couple of weeks after his return home, Jake had yet another accident {no vehicle this time} on his 19th birthday. The result of this one was far worse. Jake had to spend time at the West Penn Hospital Burn Unit. He had second and third degree burns over most of his face and neck. Nothing could have prepared us for this. His pain was immeasurable. I cried daily out of frustration of not being able to do anything to help him. I prayed for a full recovery. I begged God for Jake to have the courage and strength to get through the horrific recovery.
We are now several weeks from that awful day, and Jake is healing beautifully. He still has several more weeks to go before we will know what, if any, permanent scarring he will have. He has to avoid being in the sun and must cover his face with ointment several times a day. While this wait is unnerving, I am just so very thankful his injuries were not worse.
So, things have been chaotic {to put it mildly}, but all we can do is take everything one day at a time. Please keep Jake in your thoughts as he continues to heal. Thanks. <3
